TEDActive includes the entire simulcast of TED2010, and so much more! One of the bonus activities we've got planned for our Palm Springs contingent is a ride on a aerial tram -- one that's over 200 feet at it's highest point.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tram is a bit of historical landmark. It all began in 1935, when a young engineer called Francis Crocker looked up at the area's snow-capped mountains while on a blistering hot hike below and thought he's like to "go up there where it's nice and cool". He ran with the idea of a tram to the mountain's top, and brought on desert pioneer O. Earl Coffman, who eventually was named the chairman of the planning committee.
However there were quite a few legal and poltical roadblocks and the tram wasn't completed until 1963. Since then, more than over 12 million people have ridden the tram.
